District Committee on Ministry
District Committees on Ministry (DCOMs) serve as the local, relational extension of the Board of Ordained Ministry, walking alongside candidates as they discern and articulate God’s call to ministry. Through listening, interviewing, and evaluation, DCOMs make recommendations at the district level that support faithful, prepared, and accountable leadership for the Church.
DCOMs are composed of laity and clergy from the district, in partnership with the District Superintendent in each area.
What DCOMs do
DCOMs accompany candidates & licensed pastors by:
- Providing a trusted, local space for discernment
- Conducting annual interviews and evaluations
- Reviewing required documentation and readiness
- Making recommendations related to candidacy, licensing, and ministry pathways
- Meeting annually with CLMs (Certified Lay Ministers) and Licensed Local pastors
This work is grounded in prayerful listening, thoughtful assessment, and a commitment to the Church’s shared standards for ministry in The United Methodist Church.
Training for DCOM Members
Two foundational training videos are available for all DCOM Members:
- The “Nuts & Bolts” of DCOM Work - led by Rev. Marian Hartman
This is especially helpful for Chairs, Registrars, and Secretaries as it covers structure, process, and best practices. - Using Psychological Assessments in the Interview Process - led by Rev. Evie Madison
This training focuses on interpreting psychological information and using it to ask thoughtful, appropriate interview questions
Required documents for the training: Behavioral Health Guidelines; Personality Factors; Psychological Process
