History of the Susquehanna Conference UMC
A Conference with Deep Roots
The Susquehanna Conference of The United Methodist Church serves churches throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania. While the conference officially formed in 2010, our history stretches back more than two centuries through the faithful witness of circuit riders, local congregations, camp meetings, and generations of clergy and laity.
Today, we continue that story by equipping leaders, strengthening congregations, and creating new places for new people.
Our Heritage
Methodist Episcopal Church
The Central Pennsylvania Conference was organized in 1868, reflecting the rapid growth of Methodism across the region.
Wyoming Conference
Established in 1852, the Wyoming Conference served churches in both Pennsylvania and New York for more than 150 years.
Evangelical & United Brethren
Congregations from the Evangelical Association and the United Brethren in Christ also became part of our share history through later denominational mergers that formed The United Methodist Church.
The Formation of the Susquehanna Conference
In June 2010, two conferences came together to form the Susquehanna Conference:
- Central Pennsylvania Conference
- Pennsylvania portion of the Wyoming Conference
At the same time, the New York portion of the Wyoming Conference became part of the Upper New York Conference.
This union created the conference that serves our churches today.
