Board of Ordained Ministry
Walking with leaders from discernment through lifelong ministry in the Susquehanna Conference
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” -Matthew 4:19
The Board of Ordained Ministry (BOM) of the Susquehanna Conference serves the Church by nurturing a culture of call, guiding persons through the processes of candidacy and ordination, and supporting clergy throughout their ministry journey - from discernment through retirement.
Grounded in the vision and standards of The United Methodist Church, the Board works alongside District Committees on Ministry, the Cabinet, and conference leadership to ensure that those called to ministry and in active ministry are leading with integrity, accountability, and faithfulness.
What the Board Does
According to the Book of Disciple (¶635.2), the Board of Ordained Ministry is entrusted to:
- Cultivate a culture of discernment and calling across the Conference
- Recruit, guide, and examine candidates for licensed and ordained ministry
- Recommend persons for commissioning, ordination, and conference membership
- Support clergy through continuing education and spiritual formation
- Evaluate effectiveness and uphold ethical standards for ministry
- Work with the Bishop and Cabinet on matters of clergy status and relationship
Areas of Ministry Oversight
The work of the Board is carried out through several coordinated areas. Each area has its own resources, timeline, and contacts.
A Final Word
Discerning and living into a call to ministry is sacred work. The Board of Ordained Ministry exists not to rush that process - but to walk with you faithfully, prayerfully, and honestly, trusting the Holy Spirit to guide each step.
If you’re unsure where to begin, start with discernment. Request a Discern. Respond. Personal journal to spend time hearing, thinking and being with God - and reach out. We are glad you are here.
