Disability Ministries

Creating a church were people of all abilities are welcomed, valued, and empowered.

Our Mission

Our mission is to lead the Susquehanna Conference in creating a culture where people with disabilities are fully included in all aspects of worship, leadership, ministry, and mission. We advocate for the needs of people with disabilities, empower individuals with disabilities, and educate our churches and communities about disability awareness and inclusion.

Our History

On January 18, 2019, the Susquehanna Conference established a Disability Ministries Task Force under the umbrella of Inclusiveness and Connecting Ministries. We partner closely with:

  • DisAbility Ministries of the United Methodist Church
  • Mental Health Task Force of the Susquehanna Conference
  • Child Advocacy

Disability inclusion is rooted in our Biblical call as Christians and affirmed in the polity of The United Methodist Church.

  • The Book of Discipline (2024, 653) directs each annual conference to maintain a committee or structure to lead disability ministries and connectional relationships.
  • The Social Principles (163) affirm the full humanity and person-hood of all people with disabilities as beloved children of God
  • The Church is called to ensure that children, youth, and adults with disabilities are welcomed and empowered to participate fully in the life of faith and community
  • We recognize and celebrate the unique gifts that persons with disabilities bring to the Church
