Property, Casualty, & Trustees

Caring for the spaces that sustain our ministry

Our churches and ministry properties are sacred spaces - places where faith is lived, community is built, and lives are transformed. The Susquehanna Conference helps congregations care for these sacred spaces responsibly, providing guidance on property and insurance while ensuring the stewardship of Conference-owned properties through the Board of Trustees.

Whether protecting property through insurance and loss prevention, offering guidance on buildings and grounds maintenance, or supporting local trustees in faithful property stewardship, we provide tools, support, and resources to honor the legacy of ministry and ensure a safe environment for all. This support promotes stewardship without imposing direct oversight of daily operations.

Trustees & Property Stewardship

The Conference Board of Trustees oversees all Conference-owned properties, ensuring they are managed and maintained for the ministry of The United Methodist Church. Trustees also provide guidance and training for local church trustees, pastors, and district offices, promoting safe and responsible stewardship in line with UMC standards. All property held by local churches is held in trust for the UMC, as outlined in the Book of Discipline, and Trustees work to uphold this trust in their policies and practices.

What Trustees Do:

  • Supervise and maintain all Conference properties
  • Manage the disposition of properties from closed or surrendered churches, with net proceeds reinvested in the ministry and mission of the Conference
  • Redeploy furnishings and equipment from closed churches to active congregations
  • Provide guidance to local church trustees, pastors, and district trustees on responsible stewardship in accordance with the Trust Clause of the Book of Discipline
  • Ensure all actions honor the legacy of congregations and align with UMC Social Principles
