Editor’s Note: The following message was sent to pastoral leaders in the Susquehanna Conference on Tuesday, March 31 on behalf of Bishop Héctor A. Burgos-Núñez encouraging them to volunteer as chaplains during our summer camp season.
March 31, 2026
Dear Susquehanna pastoral leaders,
One way we can support faith formation in children and youth is through our camping ministries. Not only do we have the opportunity as pastoral leaders to invite and encourage children and youth to attend a week of conference-sponsored camp, but we can also participate by serving as a volunteer chaplain.
Being a Volunteer Chaplain is an opportunity to swap the pulpit for the outdoor chapel and evening campfire circle. By integrating pastoral leaders into our camp and retreat experiences, we aren’t just ‘programming,’ we are building a more inspired community and leaning into Pathways of Discipleship. It gives pastors a front-row seat to see faith come alive in children and youth at camp, all while giving those same leaders the space to breathe, pray, play, and return home with a full cup and stories to share.
I would like to ask you to prayerfully consider serving as a volunteer chaplain. If this is something in which you are interested, please complete the interest form here.
You can find more information on what is expected from the volunteer chaplain during a week of church camp here.
If you have questions, please reach out to our camp staff, Charlie Renner, Sam Richardson, and Emily Sliski with an email.
