With Governor Shapiro in Spirit and Resolve

Susquehanna Conference Episcopal Seal

April 16, 2025

Dear United Methodists in the Susquehanna Conference,

With a heavy heart and steadfast hope, I address the recent act of arson at Governor Shapiro’s residence in Harrisburg, an attack on the values that unite our communities - respect, justice, and the sacred worth of every person.

In this holy season of Passover, as we reflect on God’s liberating power, we are called to reject hate, division, and violence. This act is a stark reminder of the work of justice, peace, and reconciliation that Jesus calls us into as his followers. As Scripture reminds us, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9).

Rooted in grace and guide by Christ’s command to love our neighbors, we lift up Governor Shapiro, his family, and all impacted in prayer. We also pray for all of our state and national elected leaders. May God’s grace empower us to be bold bridge-builders, humbly embodying God’s love with all our neighbors and striving for a future of peace and justice.

In Christ’s love,
