CRITICAL NEED FOR CONSTRUCTION/PAINTING VOLUNTEERS AT WESLEY FOREST UM CAMP & RETREAT CENTER
We would appreciate your help in getting the word out along with any suggestions of people to contact to volunteer to help with a critical renovation project now underway at Wesley Forest UM Camp Retreat Center in Weikert.
The renovations are part of a Wide Embrace of God campaign to make the White Pine Lodge accessible for person with handicapping conditions. We will need 5 volunteers each day to help with a variety of tasks from construction, electricity, putting up wall board, painting, finish trim work, etc. We, also, need help with a variety of other tasks not requiring skilled labor but essential to the camp and retreat center. It will free up staff with specific skills from other duties to help with the renovations.
We will be working evenings, also, so those who can come after work are much appreciated too. Please, let Emily Sliski, the Center Director, know if you or others can help. It is critical to complete the work by September 27.
If you can come for a single day, evening or a longer stretch, please let Emily know. Please, spread the word to others and ask them to contact Emily if they can help on a single day or any portion of the dates below, so she can schedule and coordinate volunteers.
September 24-28 (Monday-Friday) Volunteers needed all day and/or evenings
In addition to basic workers, we are in need of certified or master plumbers and electricians.

What happens at a silent retreat?
We are silent, with conversation at meals. There is time for reading, reflection, walks on the mountain, but the core of the retreat is keeping canonical hours--the hours for prayer that monks have kept throughout the centuries. Canonical office is an ancient, but, fear not!, adapted, liturgy that retreat-ants participate in every three hours--day and night-- with night participation at your option. The flavor of the retreat is to bring Christ into the focus of each moment and to practice savoring being in His presence. You will come away relieved--from carrying life alone when you were never meant to--and refreshed--having gotten to know your Lord and yourself in new ways. The opportunity to participate in a silent retreat is soon and nearby!
Won't you risk listening for God?

HELP GIRLS IN AFRICA STAY IN SCHOOL
As I have spent more time at Mission Central I've learned how valuable the opportunity to have an education can be in some parts of the world. This is something most of us take for granted here in the United States. I learned that in some countries there is no public education and, in others, girls have to miss up to a week of school each month due to their menstrual cycle. Quite often, they end up so far behind in their studies that they are forced to drop out of school entirely and end up with no education.
This year Mission Central began making our own kits in addition to the UMCOR Kits we've always done. One of these new kits is the Feminine Hygiene Kit. This kit provides washable, hygienic, re-usable materials for women to use to manage their menstrual cycles. It provides a healthy alternative to utilizing dirt, leaves and other materials and prevents the lost time from school.
