MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Over the past seven years through Mental Health Awareness Sunday Offerings, approximately 25 churches throughout the conference have hosted the live eight-hour evidenced-based Mental Health First Aid USA Training, provided by the Mental Wellness Awareness Association in Pennsylvania, at no cost to church members. Non-UMC members have attended for $50. Currently three churches are hoping to host the training over the next several months. Contributions to the Mental Health Awareness Sunday Offering are essential to keeping this training going. In fact, we have less funds available than are needed for the number of churches who have asked to host it.

Please plan to support this much needed training by promoting Sunday, May 20, as Mental Health Awareness Sunday. Thank you for encouraging financial support for the Mental Health First Aid program of the SUSUMC. When submitting your offering, mark your contribution for offering #4050.

GRIEF FORUM - UNDERSTANDING AND APPROACHING GRIEF

March 25, 2018
Grace United Methodist Church
309 Herman Ave. Lemoyne, PA, 17043
2 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Join co-authors, Lynn Shiner and Lisa Zoll, LCSW, as they discuss the following topics:

  •     Recognize common reactions to grief.
  •     Examine a less structured approach to grief that allows grievers to focus on their journey rather than on stages, time frames, expectations, and the elimination of closure.
  •     Understand the importance of encouraging reflection and storytelling.
  •     Have a better understanding of the grieving process and how you can help others.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Anyone who has been impacted by death.
No registration required, free to the public.

FACTS:

  •     Death is awkward.
  •     Grief is grief, no matter who dies or how they die. What is different is the intensity and duration of the grieving process.
  •     Grief is complex, and everyone's journey is unique.

DEADLINE FOR HEALTH MINISTRIES GRANT APPLICATIONS IS TODAY, MARCH 1

Is your church planning health-related activities in 2018?

The Mission and Outreach Team has funds to assist with new health-related programs and with existing programs that demonstrate success. Preference will be given to projects that fulfill our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  Innovative programs that meet real community needs in connection with other local ministries and other local churches will be given high priority. Grants may be given for parish nurse related programs, including initial training for parish nurses and/or health ministries, for purchase of blood pressure apparatus and first aid kits, for printed material needed to begin a program, for expenses for a health fair, and toward the purchase of an AED and CPR/AED training up to designated amounts.

View application and policy. The deadline for 2018 funds is today, March 1.
